Patterns of Life

Video Documenting the Ancient Art of Tattooing

About this session:

Travel connects us, widens our horizons, and increases our understanding of other people and cultures. During this session, we will be joined by the filmmakers behind the up-and-coming documentary series, “Patterns of Life.” Filmmakers Sophie and Michael are driven by storytelling and have set off on the ultimate adventure to preserve cultural knowledge in some of the most tucked-away pockets of the planet. Join us live to hear from the filmmakers firsthand and learn more about the places they’ve visited, where they’re planning on going next, and all of the wild experiences they’ve had on their venture to preserve the ancient art of tattooing.

About Patterns of Life:

Traditional tattooing is older than any written language on earth, and it speaks volumes about the fundamentals of our existence. These ancient patterns are founded upon:

  • Cultural identity
  • A holistic way of life
  • Interconnectedness
  • Great respect for nature

Speakers:

Michael Zomer (Director/Filmmaker) and Sophie Brouwer (Anthropologist/Producer) are a couple from the Netherlands, driven by storytelling that matters. Together they are creating a self-funded documentary series called Patterns of Life. They travel to some of the most remote corners of our planet to document the last traditional tattoos. It is their mission to translate this indigenous language on the skin into a modern understanding before these ancient stories disappear forever. Their characteristic personalities, youthful spirit, and genuine nature allow them to connect with all kinds of people and cultures worldwide. This gives them exclusive access to various places and personal stories.

Mirza Cirkinagic - Session Moderator

KILROY

Mirza was born to a family of travelers and got the love of travel in straight through the DNA. Arriving in Denmark in the 90s as a refugee, Mirza quickly integrated himself into Danish society. Once his citizenship to Denmark was granted, and his high school finished, he left Denmark and didn’t come back for two and a half years, having traveled from the top of North America to the bottom of South America and doing a year in Australia. Since then, Mirza has been to all seven continents and 68 countries and counting. Among his favorites escapades: driving a Citroen Berlingo from London to Mongolia with three friends (18.000 km over 43 days), doing the Trans-Mongolian railway from Beijing to Sct. Petersburg, visiting Antarctica as his last continent with his future wife and kayaking there, doing the Mirza and the Explordinary Journey project; he went traveling for five weeks, and the destinations and activities were all voted on by KILROY customers. Current project: dragging his kids across the world with him.
